A Natural Place

The Victorian concept of an extra-mural cemetery was a place which not only represented the dead but also was a green space to be enjoyed, a place of peace where graves and nature could co-exist.

Once upon a time Teignmouth Old Cemetery was truly “extra-mural”, being outside the bounds of the town but 150 years has taken its toll on the surrounding land with housing developments springing up on all sides.  So it is all the more important that the Cemetery is kept as an environmental oasis which encourages nature and promotes the renewed uptake of its use as a green space to be enjoyed.

Part of the work that FOTC has been doing is to survey and document the state of the natural environment.  Initial work suggests there is a surprising diversity.  This section of the web-site documents what we have discovered so far. Click on one of the headings to see more.

Moths

Our regular surveys have revealed a richness of species. The survey in June 2020 showed over 50 different types of moth

Trees

COMING SOON. We have carried out a survey of trees in the cemetery. Details of that will be added soon.

Lichens

Our cemetery is an ideal site to study lichens, as the buildings, gravestones and trees provide surfaces on which the lichens can grow.

Flowers

As we have started to clear graves and the coverage of ivy and brambles wildflowers have had more of a chance to flourish.
