Ann Smith

Ann Smith (Entry 14 in the burial register) was buried 2nd April 1856 in plot G122

Ann Smith was born Ann Boyes and was baptised in East Ogwell on 20 Oct 1789, the daughter of John & Ann Boyes.

She married Richard Smith in West Teignmouth on 1st January 1816.  Richard Smith was born on 10 Jan 1791 and baptised in Ashcombe on 17 Jan 1791, son of John & Mary.

In total they had nine children:

  • John baptised 03 Nov 1816 in East Teignmouth
  • Mary Ann baptised 05 Dec 1819 in West Teignmouth
  • Elizabeth.  Richard was recorded as a labourer at the time when Elizabeth was baptised in West Teignmouth on 12th  Jan 1822.  Sadly she lived only 12 months and was buried on 19 Jan 1823.
  • Elizabeth Boice Smith was baptised 10 months later on 9th Nov 1823 also in West Teignmouth.  She went on to marry Richard Causley in West Teignmouth on 13th May 1844
  • Maria, baptised on 19th February 1826 in West Teignmouth, was possibly buried as ‘Mary’ on 27th January 1827 aged 12 months
  • Emma, baptised 31st August 1828, was buried on 11th September 1831 aged 3 in West Teignmouth
  • William, baptised 17th Apr 1831, was buried on 26th July 1835 aged 4 in West Teignmouth
  • James Joseph baptised 10th September 1837 in West Teignmouth
  • Emma baptised 22nd March 1840 in West Teignmouth

Research notes: I can’t be certain of these last 2 babies, the baptism register records them as children of Richard & Ann, but Ann would have been into her late 40s and in the 1841 census they appear in Old Market Street, Teignmouth with Ann Smith aged 35, a nurse.

The 1841 census information seems slightly problematic.  The couple are shown as living in Lower Brook Street, West Teignmouth together with their daughter Elizabeth, aged 15 and born in Devon.  Richard Smith was recorded as a boatman, aged 45, born in Devon, with his wife Ann Smith also aged 45 and born in Devon.  This doesn’t quite coincide with the above information.

The 1851 census seems a better fit but there is an inexplicable lack of children in the house if the last two children in the above list are correct and survived.  The couple were now living in the Strand, West Teignmouth – Richard is shown as the head of household, aged 60, a labourer born in Luton, Devon, with Ann Smith his wife also aged 60 born in East Ogwell.  They had a lodger, Ann Hamlyn, a widow aged 66, a labourer born in Ilsington, Devon.

Ann’s husband Richard was buried in West Teignmouth on 2nd Mar 1857 aged 65.

According to the burial register Ann was 66 when she died and the wife of Richard, a labourer.  She was buried in an unbricked grave in consecrated ground.  The burial was presided over by Revd J W Mason.
