Elizabeth Fish

Elizabeth Fish (Entry 3 in the burial register) was buried 9th February 1856 in plot F49

Elizabeth Fish was born Elizabeth Stevens and, after banns, married James Fish, of West Teignmouth, in the chapel of Wolborough on 13 June 1822.  Elizabeth was described as ‘of this parish’.  James signed his name, Elizabeth made her mark.

Three years later their son John was born.  He was baptised at St Nicholas Church, Ringmore, on 26 June 1825.  James & Elizabeth Fish were described as being “of Shaldon” and James was described as a painter & glazier.  John may have been their only child

The 1841 census shows Elizabeth Fish, aged 44, as living in the parish of St Nicholas, Newton Abbot together with her husband James Fish aged 42 and son John Fish aged 16, all born in Devon

By the time of the 1851 census James had died and Elizabeth was living in the High Street, Saint Nicholas, Newton Abbot.  She was described as the head of the household, a widow aged 60, her occupation given as house work and she was born in Ipplepen.  She had a lodger Leonard L Row who was unmarried and aged 42.  He was described as a Gent., born in St Nicholas.

According to the burial register Elizabeth was aged 65 and was buried in an unbricked grave in consecrated ground.  The burial was presided over by the Revd W. Robinson, curate of East Teignmouth
