Emma Ann Austin Downing (Entry 16 in the burial register) was buried on 2nd April 1856 in plot F115
Emma’s parents, James Luke Downing, a gardener, and Arabella Edith Mardon Austin were married on 3rd June 1849 at St Mary Steps Exeter
Emma Anne Austin Downing was baptised 29 Jul 1849 in East Teignmouth when her father James Luke was described as a gardener. It appears that Emma was one of twins because a second child, George Luke, was baptised with her on the same date.
Four other children followed, all after Emma’s death:
- Emily Arabella Austin, born on 15th February 1863, baptised 28th December 1876. At age 25 she married William Henry Owen age 29 on 29th September 1888 in East Teignmouth. Both fathers were declared as deceased and her own father was described as a sawyer.
- Minnie Alice, born on 29th March 1867, baptised 28th December 1876
- Bertha Emma, born on 21st February 1869, baptised 28th December 1876
- Georgina, born on 18th February 1871, baptised 28th December 1876 when her father was described as a labourer.
According to the burial register Emma was six years old when she was buried and her father was described as a railway labourer. She was buried in an unbricked grave in consecrated ground. The Revd. John Russell Shurlock presided over the burial.
