Mary Jane Hindom

Mary Jane Hindom (Entry 19 in the burial register), age 3, daughter of a mariner, Robert Hindom, and Elizabeth his wife, was buried on 30th April 1856 in plot F114

Robert Hindom was baptised on 13 Apr 1823 in West Teignmouth.  He was the son of a labourer, Amos Hindom, and his wife Sarah.

At the time of the 1841 census Robert’s family was living in Upper Brook Street, West Teignmouth.  They comprised: Amos Hindom age 45 a farmer; Sarah Hindom also age 45; and 7 children – Charlotte age 20, Charles age 20, Amos age 15, Robert age 15, Emma age 15,  Mary Ann age 14 and Jane age 5.

In 1851 the family was still in Brook Street, West Teignmouth, all were shown as having been born in Teignmouth except Sarah whose birthplace was given as Bishopsteignton.  Amos Hindom was now aged 59 and described as a dairyman cow keeper.  His wife Sarah was also aged 59 and described as “milk ??”.  Four of their children now remained with them: Robert Hindom, unmarried son age 27, a mariner; Emma Hindom, unmarried daughter age 24;  Mary Ann Hindom, unmarried daughter age 22, a dress maker; and Charlotte (should this be Jane?) Hindom unmarried  daughter age 15.  There was also a lodger Charlotte Wills, a  widow aged 58, described as an annuitant born in Teignmouth.

Shortly after this Robert Hindon married Elizabeth Lowe on 24 Feb 1852 in Marldon.  It would appear that Mary Jane was their first child.

According to the burial register Mary Jane was buried in an unbricked grave in consecrated ground.  The Revd. J W Mason presided over the burial.
