Thomas Finch (Entry 4 in the burial register) was buried 9th February 1856 in plot F50
Thomas Finch was probably born in 1780 since his baptism record shows him as being baptised at West Teignmouth on 10th November 1780 as the son of Thomas & Eliz(abeth) Finch (His mother may have been born Elizabeth Hosegood).
His father died when Thomas was only 14, on 24 Dec 1794.
Whilst still living in West Teignmouth he married Mary Heath of Bishopsteignton by licence at Bishopsteignton on 17th August 1816. Both appear to have signed the register rather than made their mark, and Thomas was described as a builder at that time. On the various records over time he is variously described as a carpenter or a joiner or builder.
Mary Heath herself was born 18th Dec 1787, daughter of Richard & Sarah, and baptised 4th January 1788 at Cockington.
By the time of 1851 census he was living at West Cliff, West Teignmouth with his wife Mary and their 3 youngest children. Altogether they had 11 children altogether, 6 daughters and 5 sons. At least 3 of the sons were also carpenters.
It appears that Mary survived Thomas by some 16 years, being buried on 8th September 1872, aged 84, and living at the time in Coombe Road.
According to the burial register Thomas was 75 when he died and was buried in an unbricked grave in consecrated ground. The burial was presided over by the Revd J. W. Mason. He is shown as having been ‘removed from St Nicholas’ which is curious unless the family had moved since the 1851 census.
