Bombing Casualties

Bombed Teignmouth Hospital (from http://www.ossett.net)

This page contains a list of the various people killed during the bombing raids on Teignmouth during WW2 and who were buried in Teignmouth Cemetery.  The information has been gleaned from the very informative Devon Heritage site and combined with the Cemetery records to show the grave locations.

Sixty-two of the casualties are buried in the Cemetery whilst another twenty are listed on the Heritage site and whose place on interment is either unknown or listed as elsewhere.  There were ten raids altogether as follows:

AATTACK ON THE SEA FRONT 7 JULY 1940
BRAID OF 2 MARCH 1941 (Hill Lane and The Avenues)
CRAID OF 8 MAY 1941 (Teignmouth Hospital and adjacent property)
DRAID OF 24 OCTOBER 1941 (Exeter Road)
ERAID OF 2 JULY 1942  (Bitton Street and the surrounding neighbourhood)
FRAID OF 31 JULY 1942 (Bitton Avenue and The Haywoods)
GRAID OF 13 AUGUST 1942 (Albion Place, Park St. and Barnpark)
HRAID OF 2 SEPTEMBER 1942 (Esplanade, Higher Brook Street and neighbourhood)
IRAID OF 3 NOVEMBER 1942 (Gwynfa Nursing Home, Salcombe and Park Street area)
JRAID OF 10 JANUARY 1943 (Powderham and Alexandra Terraces and Central Teignmouth)

According to the Heritage site 228 houses were destroyed and a further 2000 were damaged so it’s perhaps surprising and fortunate that there weren’t more casualties.

The following table lists those who are buried in the cemetery and also indicates where they were killed or injured and died later in the hospital.  Click on any name highlighted in blue for further information.
